The Groom BOOM!

20 April 2026

After a long winter of cozy cuddles, layered fur, and fewer grooming routines, many dogs come into spring with one common issue—matting 🐶❄️. At Posh Pet Club, we often see pups who’ve developed tangles and knots over the colder months, and while it’s totally normal, it’s something you’ll want to address sooner rather than later.

Here’s how to keep your dog’s coat healthy, comfortable, and mat-free as we transition into warmer weather 🌷☀️.

A groomer trims the fur of a light brown poodle standing on a grooming table in a salon.

1. Start with a Thorough Brush-Out 🪮🐾

Before jumping into baths or trims, it’s important to gently brush out your dog’s coat. Use the right brush for your dog’s fur type—slicker brushes and de-shedding tools can work wonders. We recommend using line brushing for long hair dogs with a slicker and greyhound comb! Take your time and be gentle, especially if you encounter tangles. Pulling too hard can cause discomfort and make grooming a negative experience.

2. Don’t Skip Regular Brushing 🗓️🐕

Consistency is key when it comes to preventing matting. Even just a few minutes of brushing a day can keep tangles from turning into tight knots. Pay extra attention to areas prone to matting like behind the ears, under the legs, around the collar, and near the tail.

3. Schedule a Professional Groom ✂️🐩

After months of winter buildup, a professional grooming session can make a huge difference. Groomers can safely remove stubborn mats, trim excess fur, and give your dog a fresh, clean start for the season. The start of a new season is the perfect time to come in for a de-shed! Winter undercoats begin to shed as the spring weather warms up. At Posh Pet Club, our grooming services are designed to keep your pup comfortable and looking their best.

4. Bathing the Right Way 🛁🐾

It might be tempting to bathe your dog right away, but water can actually tighten mats if they’re not brushed out first. Always detangle before a bath, and be sure to thoroughly dry your dog’s coat afterward. Damp fur can quickly lead to new tangles forming.

5. Consider a Seasonal Trim 🌼✂️

Spring is the perfect time for a haircut! Trimming down longer coats can help prevent matting, reduce shedding, and keep your dog cooler as temperatures rise. Your groomer can recommend a style that fits your dog’s breed and lifestyle. Please keep in mind we do not shave double coated breeds such as Huskies, Aussies, Pomeranians etc. This can damage the coat, we can provide light scissor trim or thorough de-shed when needed :)

6. Keep Up with Maintenance Between Grooms 🧼🐶

Regular upkeep between grooming appointments is essential. This includes brushing, wiping down muddy paws, and checking for small tangles before they become bigger problems. A little effort goes a long way in keeping your dog comfortable.

7. Watch for Signs of Problem Matting 👀🐕

Severe mats can pull on the skin, cause irritation, restrict blood flow, and even lead to infections. If you notice tight clumps of fur, sensitive spots, or changes in your dog’s behavior when touched, it’s time to seek professional help.

Winter coats may be great for staying warm, but spring is all about fresh starts 🌷🐾. Keeping up with grooming not only helps your dog look great—it also keeps them feeling their best.
